Frankenstein's Sleep Machine

Sound Sculpture
2011

Frankenstein's Sleep Machine is a sculpture, which produces a harsh, rain-like sound in its environment. The piece includes four wooden structures, each hanging four long slats of aluminum. Mounted to the base of the structures are a total of 16 DC motors rotating small arms, which hit the aluminum slats to produce the sonic landscape. The sculpture fills the room with a somewhat monstrous, uncomforting sound texture, dissimilar to a typical sleep machine, which aims to lull listeners to sleep.
